* To me the sense of the word seams to be more to endure poverty stoically, stiff 固 upper lip, but the MoE definition 安於貧困 would seem to imply to feel contented with one's poverty, to not wish for more. The Wenlin/ABC translation is different both from my suggestion and from MoE's definition, to "be able to bear poverty" one doesn't have to do it stoically or to feel contented with it.

【Wenlin】
v.o. be able to bear poverty/hardship

【LAC】

【MoE】

Tacked onto that was a whole string of words that were difficult to understand, things like The gentleman doth stand firm in his poverty,3 and verily this and forsooth that. #2Everyone roared with laughter. #3The space within the shop and the space surrounding the shop swelled with joy. (Lyell)
Then followed quotations from the classics, like “A gentleman keeps his integrity even in poverty,” and a jumble of archaic expressions til everybody was roaring with laughter, and the whole tavern was gay. (Yangs)
he would argue back, illustrating his point with a perplexing smarter of archaisms: 'poverty and learning, oft twixt by jowl', etcetera, etcetera. At which everyone inside (and outside) the tavern would collapse with mirth. Kong Yiji truly brought with him the gift of laughter. (Lovell)
