<< review queue entry 63764 - submitted by 'sl89' >> I noticed a lot of missing simplified characters (some are clearly mistakes but most likely weren't encoded——or were encoded but not rendered in most fonts——when the entry was submitted) and, trying to find a way to fix this kind of issue, wrote a small python script to compare the CEDICT simplified heading with the result of the OpenCC automatic conversion. From that I got a list that includes both CEDICT and OpenCC mistakes, and simply bad conversions, but that I find is useful for my purpose (full list here for reference: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/b4KGxX67rQ/). In this batch I'm only trying to submit obvious missing characters (generally, the same character with simplified radicals) that are rendered in my system. I didn't confirm the definitions. I will submit more complicated cases individually or in smaller batches. I think it's CEDICT policy to not submit characters that aren't included in widely used or freely available fonts, as those characters wouldn't render in most systems. If I'm wrong about this I will gladly submit the characters that don't render in my system. If I'm not, I'd like to offer my dissenting argument: A dictionary is essentially text, and in the case of of digital text that means code points in a certain encoding. Because CEDICT (thankfully) uses the a Unicode encoding, for us that means Unicode code points. As soon as a character is encoded in the Unicode standard we should be able to use the character. The fact is we have no way of knowing which characters render for most users, maybe many of the characters already here won't render on most systems, and maybe a significant number of characters never will. But if we use the right character, once a font includes it the reader will be able to see it; if a software developer makes the effort to make the characters render (such as with Pleco's rare characters font), the reader will see them; if a piece of software doesn't use traditional fonts to render Chinese characters (like Wenlin, where you can consult CC-CEDICT for US$20), the reader will be able to see it. If the wrong character is in the dictionary the reader will never be able to see the right one, no matter what font, device or software they use. Worse, once the wrong character is in the dictionary, it might stay there forever, for ever wrong, as there is no way to search for this kind of mistake. (This submission is my attempt to help, but likely there are many, many more characters in this situation I couldn't find.) Using the right character/code-point, whether any of us can actually see it rendered in our device is a way of future-proofing the dictionary. The following is a list of characters that could (likely, I haven't reviewed this list properly) be included in this submission but don't render on my system. (For clarity: by "my system" I mean my home laptop with Manjaro Linux and all basic Windows fonts and updated free CJK fonts installed, including all of Google's Noto fonts——not a common setup but easy to reproduce. Some of the characters on this submission don't render on my work laptop, a MacBook Pro with all Noto fonts installed.) | Traditional | CEDICT | OpenCC | |----------------+----------------+----------------| | 䞓 | 䞓 | 𫎭 | | 䥯 | 䥯 | 𫔆 | | 嗹 | 嗹 | 𪡏 | | 噞 | 噞 | 𪡋 | | 囒 | 囒 | 𪢠 | | 囒哰 | 囒哰 | 𪢠哰 | | 囒噸 | 囒吨 | 𪢠吨 | | 圞 | 圞 | 𪢮 | | 大麻鳽 | 大麻鳽 | 大麻𫛚 | | 栗葦鳽 | 栗苇鳽 | 栗苇𫛚 | | 小葦鳽 | 小苇鳽 | 小苇𫛚 | | 栗鳽 | 栗鳽 | 栗𫛚 | | 海南鳽 | 海南鳽 | 海南𫛚 | | 紫背葦鳽 | 紫背苇鳽 | 紫背苇𫛚 | | 屩 | 屩 | 𪨗 | | 巗 | 岩 | 𪨷 | | 幩 | 幩 | 𪩸 | | 廧 | 廧 | 𪪞 | | 愚騃 | 愚騃 | 愚𫘤 | | 痴騃 | 痴騃 | 痴𫘤 | | 憸 | 憸 | 𪫺 | | 撊 | 撊 | 𪭾 | | 撧 | 撧 | 𪮖 | | 攋 | 攋 | 𪮶 | | 檵 | 檵 | 𪲛 | | 檵木 | 檵木 | 𪲛木 | | 檵花 | 檵花 | 𪲛花 | | 櫠 | 櫠 | 𪲮 | | 欐 | 欐 | 𪲔 | | 欑 | 欑 | 𪴙 | | 澬 | 澬 | 𫞚 | | 濿 | 濿 | 𪵱 | | 灒 | 灒 | 𪷽 | | 煇 | 煇 | 𪸩 | | 爥 | 爥 | 𪹳 | | 瑽 | 瑽 | 𪻐 | | 璝 | 璝 | 𪻺 | | 矉 | 矉 | 𪾸 | | 礮 | 礮 | 𪿫 | | 絁 | 絁 | 𫄟 | | 絍 | 絍 | 𫟃 | | 縫絍 | 缝絍 | 缝𫟃 | | 緤 | 緤 | 𫄬 | | 縰 | 縰 | 𫄳 | | 繈 | 繈 | 𫄶 | | 繨 | 繨 | 𫄤 | | 纚 | 纚 | 𫄥 | | 羵 | 羵 | 𫅗 | | 蒭 | 蒭 | 𫇴 | | 蒭藁增二 | 蒭藁增二 | 𫇴藁增二 | | 蒲鉾 | 蒲鉾 | 蒲𫓴 | | 蔯 | 蔯 | 𫈟 | | 蕝 | 蕝 | 𫈵 | | 蕳 | 蕳 | 𫈉 | | 薆 | 薆 | 𫉁 | | 藷 | 薯 | 𫉄 | | 蟜 | 蟜 | 𫊸 | | 蟳 | 蟳 | 𫊻 | | 訑 | 訑 | 𫍙 | | 詊 | 詊 | 𫟟 | | 詑 | 詑 | 𫍡 | | 誂 | 誂 | 𫍥 | | 誋 | 誋 | 𫍪 | | 謆 | 謆 | 𫍸 | | 譆 | 嘻 | 𫍻 | | 譊 | 譊 | 𫍢 | | 豵 | 豵 | 𫎆 | | 賝 | 賝 | 𫎩 | | 贉 | 贉 | 𫎫 | | 贑 | 赣 | 𫎬 | | 蹔 | 暂 | 𫏐 | | 蹻 | 跷 | 𫏋 | | 軜 | 軜 | 𫐇 | | 軨 | 軨 | 𫐉 | | 軷 | 軷 | 𫐈 | | 軿 | 軿 | 𫐌 | | 轇 | 轇 | 𫐖 | | 轗 | 轗 | 𫐘 | | 轗軻 | 轗轲 | 𫐘轲 | | 鈆 | 鈆 | 𫓪 | | 鉠 | 鉠 | 𫓭 | | 鉾 | 鉾 | 𫓴 | | 鍉 | 鍉 | 𫔂 | | 鎍 | 鎍 | 𫔅 | | 鎞 | 鎞 | 𫔇 | | 鏦 | 鏦 | 𫓩 | | 鏾 | 鏾 | 𫔌 | | 鑴 | 鑴 | 𫔔 | | 閗 | 閗 | 𫔯 | | 霣 | 霣 | 𫕥 | | 鞾 | 靴 | 𫖇 | | 顣 | 顣 | 𫖹 | | 飶 | 飶 | 𫗣 | | 餧 | 喂 | 𫗪 | | 餪 | 餪 | 𫗬 | | 餫 | 餫 | 𫗥 | | 饟 | 饷 | 𫗵 | | 馯 | 馯 | 𫘛 | | 駞 | 驼 | 𫘞 | | 駻 | 駻 | 𫘣 | | 騃 | 騃 | 𫘤 | | 騉 | 騉 | 𫘥 | | 驙 | 驙 | 𫘰 | | 鬠 | 鬠 | 𫘽 | | 魦 | 魦 | 𫚌 | | 魵 | 魵 | 𫚍 | | 鮿 | 鮿 | 𫚚 | | 鯆 | 鯆 | 𫚙 | | 鰋 | 鰋 | 𫚢 | | 鰦 | 鰦 | 𫚤 | | 鰫 | 鰫 | 𫚦 | | 鰽 | 鰽 | 𫚧 | | 鱄 | 鱄 | 𫚋 | | 鱆 | 鱆 | 𫠒 | | 鱆魚 | 鱆鱼 | 𫠒鱼 | | 鱮 | 鱮 | 𫚈 | | 鳷 | 鳷 | 𫛛 | | 鳽 | 鳽 | 𫛚 | | 黃葦鳽 | 黄苇鳽 | 黄苇𫛚 | | 黑冠鳽 | 黑冠鳽 | 黑冠𫛚 | | 黑鳽 | 黑鳽 | 黑𫛚 | | 鴔 | 鴔 | 𫛡 | | 鴗 | 鴗 | 𫁡 | | 鴥 | 鴥 | 𫛣 | | 鴳 | 鴳 | 𫛩 | | 鴽 | 鴽 | 𫛪 | | 鵩 | 鵩 | 𫛳 | | 鵫 | 鵫 | 𫛱 | | 鶒 | 鶒 | 𫛶 | | 鸂鶒 | 㶉鶒 | 㶉𫛶 | | 鶗 | 鶗 | 𫛸 | | 鶗鴃 | 鶗鴃 | 𫛸𫛞 | | 鶦 | 鶦 | 𫛷 | | 鷩 | 鷩 | 𫜁 | | 齩 | 咬 | 𫜪 | | 齰 | 齰 | 𫜬 | | 齾 | 齾 | 𫜰 | | 嬦 | 嬦 | 𫝩 | | 孄 | 孄 | 𫝮 | ================================ Editor: You wrote > "I think it's CEDICT policy to not submit characters that aren't included in widely used or freely available fonts, as those characters wouldn't render in most systems." We reject any character that fails to display properly in this cc-cedict wiki website. For example, back in 2013 someone attempted to submit - 釳 釳 [xi4] /(arch.) metal horn attached as shield to horse or to the axle of a chariot/ + 釳 𨰿 [xi4] /(arch.) metal horn attached as shield to horse or to the axle of a chariot/ But it appeared as follows in our wiki: # - 釳 釳 [xi4] /(arch.) metal horn attached as shield to horse or to the axle of a chariot/ # + 釳 U+28c3f [xi4] /(arch.) metal horn attached as shield to horse or to the axle of a chariot/ So it had to be rejected. You have just submitted the same two lines. This time, in 2019, they displayed properly, so we can accept the change. Below, your comments are marked with #. Mine are marked with ###. |

It might actually be easier to remember 鼗, because it's more logical (since it contains the component 鼓, which is suggestive of the meaning of the whole character) # ## And if you can't remember 鞀 as easily, then it may actually take you longer to handwrite it than 鼗. # ## As for reading, I'd say the 鼓 component makes it easier for people to recognize 鼗 as a kind of drum than 鞀. # ## In other words, stroke count is not the be-all-and-end-all of simplicity: the arrangement of the strokes is also important. # ## Which string is more memorable: 0000011111 or 110101110?
