<< review queue entry 59932 - submitted by 'ghast' >> there are many examples of 街坊 actually denoting people (the neighbors themselves) and not a place (neighborhood). for instance : "今年的元旦又來了, 大雜院的街坊們拭目以待" (from a textbook). Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary ("POCD") goes even further, and has only "neighbors" as definition for this term. 國語辭典 explicitly mentions "鄰居" as a meaning for this term, link: https://www.moedict.tw/%E8%A1%97%E5%9D%8A I'm not sure about the plural though, 鄰居 is "neighbor" (singular) in CC-CEDICT currently (POCD also does). From examples I've seen it can be used to denote just one neighbor, but perhaps it is more often used in the plural. --- ed: MoE has: ② 鄰居。老殘遊記.第十四回;「俺有個舊街坊李五爺,現在也住在這齊河縣,做個小生意。」 '有個舊街坊' singular/plural - both work |
