From 500P, none of my Pleco dict has it. Google suggests that the second part of the idiom accepts a lot of variations (你還喘上了 etc), I'm only listing theirs here.
The second gloss is verbatim from 500P, but isn't an idiom I'm familiar with.

The idea is that after being complimented, someone fails to be humble and instead adds self-praise on top. The initial praiser then makes this remark, to signify to the person praised that they've failed to be humble.

A: 你这个娱乐记者一定采访过很多大明星吧?
B: 当然啦,像成龙啊,周润发啊经常请我喝茶。
A: 说你胖你就喘上了,你一个狗仔队,人家见到你不骂你就算你幸运了。
A: As an entertainment reporter, you must have interviewed a lot of movie stars, right?
B: Of course! Like, Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat often invite me for tea.
A: Flattery, like perfume, should be smelled, not swallowed. You paparazzi, you should consider yourself lucky if they see you and don’t berate you.

A: 你们的产品最近好像很畅销。
B: 是啊。我们已经占领了本省市场,下一步是全国市场,再下一步是
全球市场。我们准备三年内超过英国对手,五年内超过美国对手。
A: 好家伙,说你胖你就喘。什么时候超过火星上的对手啊?
A: It seems like your products have been selling well recently.
B: Yeah. We’ve already captured the market in this province; next we’ll capture the national market, then the world market. We are prepared to overtake our English rivals in three years, and our American rivals within five years.
A: Wow. Flattery, like perfume, should be smelled, not swallowed, buddy. When are you going to overtake your competitors on Mars?

打比方说:“说你长的帅,你du就真以为你很帅了”的意思
一般在俩个朋友很亲密,互相开玩笑时
有时候也会是一些人故意讥笑别人。
举例:
一女孩跟一男孩说:你手机很新款啊,新买的?
男孩: 是啊,哈哈,花了5千块钱
女孩:真有钱啊!
男孩:那是,哈哈。。我本想买6千 的, 那 部太难看了。。
女孩:哟,说你胖你还喘上了!

Friend: 桌子上摆着的是谁的照片?
Man: 是我父母年轻是的结婚照
Friend: 难怪你长得这么帅。原来你跟你爸爸年轻时一样精神。
Man: 我可比我爸帅多了,我们班女生都说我帅呆了。
Friend:

Does it need a further gloss? The idea is that people, as opposed to trees, can adapt and that change is not insurmountable.
-----------------------------------

Editor: TP
目前台語或客語相聲,不少是直接從國語相聲的段子翻譯而來。王振全便坦承,他對閩南語的領會還有限,目前「漢霖」發行的一系列方言相聲,都是從國語加以「翻譯」。不過當然不是每句話都能「直譯」,例如北京諺語「人挪活,樹挪死」,就得找出台語的「人要翻,雞要啄」才講得通。
Currently, many of the Taiwanese or Hakka comic dialogues are directly translated from Mandarin xiang sheng. Wang Chen-chuan admits frankly that his comprehension of Taiwanese is still limited. The series of local-dialect dialogues put out by the Hanlin Troupe up to now are all translated from Mandarin. But then, not every sentence can be literally translated. For example, the Beijing expression "People move to live, but if you move trees they die" can only be transformed into the Taiwanese idiom, "People have to work, chickens have to peck."

雖然各地樹木保護條例的實施,已為老樹保育帶來希望,然而與迎面而來的公共工程建設相較,老樹又顯得微不足道起來。儘管明文規定老樹可被保留,以「假植」(動工前先遷移,待新建築物完工後再移植回來)或「移植」方式處理,但俗語說「人挪活、樹挪死」,老樹不容易適應環境,存活率不高卻是不爭的事實;再者,移植過後的老樹,原本優美的樹相不易維持,也讓執行單位傷神不少。
The passing of tree protection laws throughout Taiwan is a ray of hope in the preservation of trees, but when up against public works projects, old trees get neglected again. The law stipulates that old trees may be preserved by "heeling in" (moving a tree before construction, and moving it back after completion of a building) or transplanting. However, as the old saying goes, "For people, movement is life; for trees it is death." Old trees have difficulty in adapting to a new environment, and their survival rate is low. Also, maintaining the original appearance of a tree after it is transplanted is a difficult task which requires great effort.

"Haoren ka," literally "good person card," is a product of collectible card games and cartoons based on them. In such games, these cards are powerful weapons that target "good"-aligned characters, and no matter the trials and tribulations you might go through, one tiny little haoren ka can be enough to completely destroy you. In the real world, it has taken on another meaning-when a young man's advances are turned down by a girl with the traditional line, "You're such a good person, but I just don't think it would work out between us. You'll find someone better," that has become known as being given your haoren ka as a symbol of your romantic failure.

至此中國以鬼為尊的觀念不僅隨著神仙思想遠逝,襲自印度的閻王地獄裡,剝皮、上刀山、下油鍋等慘事成為民間深刻的共同記憶,
From this point on, veneration of ghosts among the Chinese not only declined in favor of the notion of immortals, but the torments of the hell of King Yama, adopted from India, in which people were flayed alive, thrown onto mountains of swords or cast into boiling oil, became deeply imprinted on the Chinese psyche.

500P has this nice phrase which I can't beat. The idea is that if someone sees you stealing the pole (something probably of little value), they'll assume you've stolen the donkey, and you'll get punished for that.

The story there is interesting:
https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/340931588.html
------------------------------------------

Editor:
"get caught holding the bag" implies that you were involved with others, and they abandoned you, leaving you to take the blame for something.

In the "500 Proverbs" examples, someone does get the blame somewhat unfairly, but they have not been abandoned by the others (because they were never involved with them in the first place).

So although "left holding the bag" is nice and pithy, it differs from the Chinese expression in a crucial way.

The following story of the saying's origins reinforces the notion that, in general, the one who is blamed has no connection with the main culprits.

“人家牵驴你拔橛”的由来

这句俗语可能来源于某个历史时代的农村某地曾经发生的一个故事;

Meanwhile, local governments hoping to grab a piece of the expanded market that would result from direct links are seeking permission from the central government to establish bases for direct travel and transport by sea or air. Legislators have even proposed "city-to-city links" in which authority over direct travel and transport would be delegated by the central government to local governments. The rapid response by both the private sector and local governments has put pressure on the Yu cabinet as it seeks to deal with the direct links issue.

"Cross-strait liberalization is no panacea," says Christina Liu. "Taiwan can't let wishful thinking or the desire to 'move things along' compel it to rush." Liu Meng-chun similarly argues that invigorating Taiwan's economy will require a major overhaul of financial and industrial policy, and of the tax code, in addition to the elimination of barriers to cross-strait trade.

The recent wave of new social enterprises has grown out of greater insight into life at lower levels of society, a sense of mission to improve things, and a desire to create financially sustainable enterprises that can provide social services. PLC gives the following example: 工廠倒閉了,工人們只能自謀出路。
Other examples also suggest having to find an escape from a job position that has become unstable.
-------------------------

Editor: Examples I found suggest that the meaning is a bit broader than finding a job.

但在中共国,老百姓为了谋生,到处摆小摊,也根本不交税。因为你如果不让他们谋生,就得政府提供福利保障。如果政 府不管事,那就人民只能自谋出路。

Q 请翻译这句话,不要机器翻译!请详细解释其中take off和最后一个on的意思。
A 我姐姐(或妹妹)自大学预科以后就离开自谋出路了
take off就是开始、离开的意思
take off on her own track就是开始走自己的道路,自己的生活轨迹
track就是指人生的轨迹的意思

政府安排与失业者自谋出路相结合
government-provided employment opportunities together with job searches undertaken by the unemployed themselves

India should leave Maldives to fend for itself.
印度应该让马尔代夫去自谋出路。

按目前形势,本厂最多再维持一个月,所有工人请提前做好停工准备,自谋出路。

如果你不是,你就得自谋出路了……”
If you're not, you're out on your.."

精省消息傳出後,無論是職等較高的科處長級官員,或是工友司機,都或多或少自謀出路。儘管人事處處長吳堯峰認為,這兩年省府整體員工人事異動並未比往年多,但是有些廳處的官員,只要是中央或地方政府有缺,特別是工作地點如果是在台中縣市等地,即使是降調也有人欣然就往。
Since news of the downsizing first broke, provincial government workers at all levels, from section chiefs down to janitors and drivers, have more or less been on the lookout for new arrangements. Although Personnel Department director Wu Yau-fong states that overall staff turnover has not risen compared to previous years, whenever openings are available in the central government or local governments (especially in locations such as Taichung county or city), some department-level officials happily accept reassignment, even to lower level positions.

The "live-fish ships" that have been developed over the last two years represent another Taiwanese specialty. Lee Fu-chen, a fish farmer from Jia-dong who created the first live-fish ship, explains that the slightest mishap when shipping live fish can cause the entire haul to die. There's a high level of risk. Early on, there simply weren't any shipping companies that would dare to accept this kind of business, so fish farmers had to make do themselves, jimmy-rigging the holds of fishing boats into live fish receptacles. Pipes were placed through the hulls to create water circulation. The boat would expel water when rising on waves and take in water when falling on waves.

Editor: We have a four-character version of it -- 画虎类犬.

examples from TP:
否則會有「畫虎不成反類犬」的反效果。
As pointed out in commentary written by dramatist Yao Yi-wei, collective improvisation is not a formula which just anyone can apply. In the hands of the wrong person, it results in a proverbial case of "turning a botched attempt at painting a tiger into a dog-like something-or-other."

近年來,有些業者為了因應市場需求與成本考量,到中國大陸請人代工。但大陸師傅由於經驗不足,不但棉布沒有做防縮處理,貼完布胎後也貪快日曬,結果成品全部變形,變形後的獅頭就像成語所形容的:「畫虎不成反類犬」。
In recent years some lion head makers have outsourced the work to suppliers in China to keep up with demand and save money on labor, but the artisans there lack experience. They don't presoak the cheesecloth, and they set the heads out to dry in the sunlight to speed things. After these heads go into service, the fabric eventually becomes terribly deformed, calling to mind the old Chinese saying about "drawing a tiger that looks more like a dog."

陳儒修認為,當觀眾已被「十年磨一劍」、精緻無比的《阿凡達》養大胃口,其後跟進的3D電影如果沒有同等份量的視聽效果和劇情烘托,只會「畫虎不成反類犬」,當新鮮感過後,3D將迅速退燒成為「雞肋」。
In Chen's view, now that audiences have had their appetites whetted by Avatar, a carefully crafted film that was years in gestation, the industry is setting itself up for a big fall if other 3D movies fail to provide a sensory thrill or storyline to equal what people got with Avatar. Once the novelty wears off, 3D really won't have anything going for it.

1) Re "none of my dicts":
Hmm. Maybe it's considered undignified to include such crude expressions in one's dictionary.

2) Example for "where one stands depends on where one sits":
"This general pattern was punctuated by several differences of timing and emphasis. For example, Singaporean and European Commission leaders did not budge in their responsibility rhetoric; in contrast, UK policymakers, particularly Chancellor, Alistair Darling, eventually did engage in some acknowledgment of responsibility. What factors might have caused such differences? They are mainly contextual, underlining that there is truth in the cliché that where one stands depends on where one sits."
