Context, from a fairy tale: 我已经不是你媳妇了,你哭得再凶,也不能让江水倒着流
I am not your wife anymore. Your crying is pathetic, you cannot turn back the past.
-----------------

Editor: It's not an idiom. There are only six examples of "让江水倒着流" on the entire Web (as far as Google can see).
It's a construct based on 让 (make), 江水 (the river), and 倒流 (flow backwards), and the metaphor doesn't need a dictionary entry to be understood.

By the way, whose translation is this?
"turn back the past"? Presumably you mean "turn back time" or "turn back the clock" or something.
("turn back the past" doesn't make sense; it has just 7 Google results; "turn back time" has 446,000.)

As for "turn back the tide", that's the wrong metaphor. It doesn't mean "undo what happened". It means "to check the growth of something / to arrest a trend".

The expression given seems just an erhua version. It created problems when I encou tered non-erhua 挪窝 in a text. Here is the context: 挖井人恍然大悟,下到井底一看,果然有一只巨大的青蛙屁股堵住泉眼不挪窝. The keeper of the well was startled; he climbed down to the bottom of the well to have a look, and there really was an enormous frog that blocked the mouth of the spring with its butt and would not move.

Editor: this is a distinct Beijingism, for example used by Lin Haiyin. As such, it cannot be pronounced without erhua. But many speakers do not write down the erhua, they consider it's just part of the 'accent'. Having it w.o the erhua however would give a wrong idea of its pronunciation.
Of course this may change if this word becomes mainstream w/o erhua.

If you don't find 挪窩兒 when searching for 挪窩, your search tool is not adapted. Change it.

You are right to point that it's not just 'move house'. But in your example, that frog had been sitting there a long time, it's not just 'move aside' but sth like 'pull out your roots'

The main meaning, those who do things together as one group, is missing in the definition but very evident from entries that include this word

Editor: I agree with adding a noun sense, but verbal usage is very common.
"hold a rally", "a rally" and "cooperative" seem off the mark.
"unity" seems better than "union".

The adjectival sense "friendly; harmonious" is missing.

Came up when talking to a 12yo girl studying in Guangzhou, with parents living in Hongkong; she lives with one of the girl teachers of the study center, specifically she said that the teacher is not a ganma (godmother) but the given word; verified via google translate.

===============================================

Editor: I think you are suggested a long-winded explanation of what you mean by "foster mother" because you are thinking of that term as it is narrowly defined in Wiktionary ("female adult who cares for a child who has been placed in foster care") rather than the more general definition given in Webster ("woman that feeds or brings up another's child"). We could attempt to explain what sort of foster mother is meant, but to be consistent we might need to rework a large number of other, related entries, such as 養母, 義父 etc.

There are quite a few terms for family-like relationships between people who are not related by blood. The initial character of these is often 養, 寄, 誼, 義, 乾, 契, or 保. Here is a collection of such terms from the Wikipedia article 乾親. Many of these terms are not found in dictionaries, and the article suggests that there are regional variations in usage within China.

常見稱謂
誼父母、誼子女的稱謂繁多,於不同地區也有不同的稱謂:

男性長輩:誼父、義父、乾爹、乾爸、乾大、契父、契爺、契爸、保爺等
女性長輩:誼母、義母、乾媽、乾娘、契母、契媽、契娘、保娘等
男性幼輩:誼子、義子、乾兒子、乾兒、契兒、契仔、契子等
女性幼輩:誼女、義女、乾女兒、乾閨女、契女等

One dictionary has the following relationship words that begin with 契, but not 契爸 or 契媽, for example.

契弟 qìdì ◊ (Guangzhou) sworn (younger) brother
契友 qìyǒu [ n ] ◊ bosom friend
契父 qìfù ◊ adoptive father
契交 qìjiāo ◊ close friendship
契兄弟 qìxiōngdì ◊ sworn bothers
契厚 qìhòu ◊ close (like friendship)
契母 qìmǔ ◊ (Guangzhou) adoptive mother
至契好友 zhìqìhǎoyǒu ◊ closest friend(s)
契兄 qìxiōng ◊ (Guangzhou) sworn elder brother

(None of these is in CC-CEDICT, by the way.)
